Students often write poetry and stories for our school newspaper, Jornal Despertar. The following is one of my favorite pieces this trimester, by Manuel Fole, one of my 12th grade students.
SOMOS AFRICANOS.
De côr preta nascido do algodão e do café nesta terra de fé onde todo nós somos.
Somos Africanos, de côr de carvão,
vividos na escuridão,
sem nenhuma compaixão perdido no sol ardente.
Somos Africanos. Nas veias
correm o sangue do Nilo, Chiloango,
e Zambeze. Somos Africanos, de mente nua,
alma crua,
abençoados,
e muito queridos.
[Translated to English:
WE ARE AFRICAN.
the color black, born of cotton and coffee in this land of faith of which we are part. We are Africans, the color of charcoal, experienced in the darkness, with no compassion lost in the blazing sun. We are African. In our veins
runs the blood of the Nile, Chiloango
and Zambeze. We are African, of sincere mind, raw heart,
blessed,
and very dear.
